Feeling Feelings? The Plight of Empaths

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Blog

The Plight of EmpathsBecause many Reiki practitioners are empaths, a common discussion among practitioners revolves around the suffering that is felt when a friend or client has an illness or is going through a situation that seems sad.

Events Can’t Be Judged

As an empath, I always try to remember that what others are experiencing is not random and cruel. I have found, paraphrasing Buddhist thought, that there’s no reason to judge every life event as either good or bad. When we see everything as good or bad, we are forgetting that whatever happens is ultimately to help us all on the path to our unique wholeness. That is, life experiences cannot be relegated to a simple judgment. Life is so vast, experiences so nuanced and varied, like multifaceted gemstones, that they need to be examined and appreciated from a deeper perspective. And that examination is the job of the experiencer, not the observer. In fact, it is utterly impossible for me, as a different person with a different past history, to truly understand how my friend is experiencing that challenge!

Everything Happens for Our Highest Good

A good question that I ask myself, when confronted with this type of situation, is if I really believe that everything that happens to us is for our highest good. If my answer is yes, that means the “bad” illness or event happening to my friend isn’t actually “bad” after all. It’s ultimately for their highest good, for their growth into wholeness. Furthermore, getting really tough with my self-questioning because I can, I ask myself, do I really believe that we have angels and spirit guides helping us? Yes, I know and have experienced the fact that nobody is exempt from that help, so even my friend who is going through the tough time, has help. I trust that.

Let the Angels Carry That Empath Weight

I then give my friend and/or client, and her situation, over into the hands of her angels, taking her off my shoulders. I have to stop carrying her because she is too heavy! Thankfully, my friend and her illness are not my responsibility. Each time I feel the burden in my heart, of another friend who is going through a challenging life event, my spirit guides show me that we were never meant to carry others in this way. So I decide to honor each person’s life process by allowing them to go through their challenges as they see fit. I can offer support and Reiki, with no expectation of resolution, just for their highest good. They do the healing themselves, in their own time, and in their own way.

Your Cup Runneth Over with Love

As you honor the unique path of others by allowing them to have their challenging life experience, without judging it, you can offer love and help without becoming overburdened yourself. You can let the emotions go through you and send love. It works! As I have done with those I love who are suffering, you may find that you need to give them over to their angels again and again, as you find yourself carrying them, because you love them. But releasing them is so worth it. Your suffering will be lessened and you’ll find an ability to stay balanced and centered. In turn, your cup remains full so you can share the support you enjoy yourself.

Be a Blessing to Yourself

be your blessingBe gentle

Tread lightly

Walk slowly

Savor

A soft hand leads you.

Let love be your guide

your only guide

your one and only guide.

Love’s words are not heavy, scary or burdensome.

Love’s words come packed with nurturing feelings.

These feelings feel safe, protected and caring.

So when you wake up, remember love.

Reminisce on past joys

And let these joys hurl you into your bliss

That already surrounds and holds you.

The thought machine of mind is a two-edged sword.

Casting blame and doubt, it remembers

What is no longer valid and true.

Each day is new with possibility to pursue

Use the sword’s edge to sever what no longer serves you.

Let the present newness awaken

so the past can be put to rest.

Open to your greatness within.

And remember this…

Your inner being is like a lush, English garden.

Tend it well to allow the natural beauty to overtake the grounds-

Bunches of bright colors warm the soul

and brighten the mood-

Your inner kaleidoscope, your inspiration!

Today, be a blessing to yourself.

Acceptance — A Gift from the Universe

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Blog

Acceptance leads to peaceWhat if you accepted everything that came your way as if it were a gift from the Universe? What would your life look like, if you made this your daily practice? Imagine being thankful for the cold you got, that slowed you down enough so that you could rest. Imagine responding to a diagnosis of illness with a palpable peace. You’d be able to make decisions for yourself with much more clarity.

We resist unpleasant things to protect ourselves from what we perceive as bad or threatening. Because of our judgment of the experience as bad and something to resist and fight, we suffer fear in the process. We may then try to cure, medicate, or numb ourselves, as long as the pain and the fear wrapped around it go away. What if we chose to accept what happened to us instead?

The Universe Works on Our Behalf

During a time of sadness or chaos, have you ever experienced the feeling of having everything work out, as if it were orchestrated for you to learn an important life lesson? This is not a random occurrence. This is the Universe working on your behalf. You can experience this more and more, through a basic attitude change. Complaining is a victim’s game, and it doesn’t feel good. Consider the idea that you can regain your personal power through acceptance.

Choose Acceptance

With practice, acceptance can become a bigger part of your life. Work on developing the habit of being grateful for all your life experiences, as if you chose them. And imagine how you can glean the wisdom of your unique past through this process.

What I’m describing is not a departure from seeking medical care when it’s needed. It’s a mindset. It’s a way of seeing your world that is helpful and health inducing. And it works.

Your Life is a Treasure

Your body is a finely-tuned antenna for what is happening in your psyche. It can even alert you to when an emotional upset is skillfully buried deep within the mind. Your body can help you in your quest to live a full life and accomplish your goals and dreams. When you respect your physical and emotional processes, you give yourself space to heal. And more importantly, this acceptance heals the heart.

Peace,

Eye of the Storm

Eye of the Storm - dealing with an emotional storm

We frequently find ourselves in the midst of an emotional storm. It can be through our own doing, or other people’s dramas that affect us. I’m going through one right now.

Cleaning up a hoarder’s house is a disgustingly horrible task. Due to a death in the family, we find ourselves cleaning up the mess amassed over years of mental illness and physical debilitation.

This deceased person had been a challenge to deal with for many years. Cleaning up this hovel brings up emotionally charged grievances for many in my family. Their challenge is to see it for what it is and constructively integrate their past experience, and their issues with this family member, into their psyches. My challenge, however, is to see their distress and help where I can, knowing the process is important for their growth, while not trying to make it all better for them. How do I do this?

Be a Witness

I repeatedly, on good days, draw myself into the center, or the eye, of this storm by remembering who I am and standing back to watch the storm swirl around me. It seems that if I take one step into the swirling debris of emotional upheaval affecting my loved ones, I begin to spin. This spin cycle results in feeling bad, forgetting my inner core being and my connection to Source, and forgetting that I am in the arms of the loving Universe. That feeling inevitably leads to anxiety. So, step one is to go into the eye of the storm by becoming a witness instead of a participant, and stepping into my heart of love.

Observe and Process with Love

The next part of the equation is to sit quietly and look at this turmoil. I ask myself what, in particular, is most distressing to me. I ask myself what, about this situation, brings up feelings of any past traumas in my own life. The part of me that was not able to fix hurtful situations in the past – in this case, my experience of being bullied as a child, is what came up for me. So I give that part of me, that innocent part that suffered that trauma, love. I do this by putting my hand on my heart and giving myself love and Reiki. It calms my inner storm.

Regardless of whether I can figure out the answer to my triggered emotion right away, this process allows me to get back to my core self, my heart of love, the Eye of the Storm. I know that from this vantage point, I can see clearer what’s in front of me, and what’s affecting me. This act of loving my heart, gives me the feeling that I can now move constructively in a positive direction from my center.

Define and Confine

From this place of watchfulness and self-love, the storm around my loved ones seems more defined, instead of feeling like a huge cloud of despair with no way out. The witness, which I become, can watch the sadness and anger of others and send love into the situation. More importantly, the witness who is present with the moment can have peace.

Embrace the Freedom an Emotional Storm Delivers

Now I find myself standing inside the storm, watching it, and at peace. I know from my own experience with emotional challenges, that all this is as much for the healing of each of my family members, as it is for me. I know that the challenges of life are here, ultimately, to free us from our own past traumas and fears. Weathering an emotional storm in this way, brings inner freedom.

Surrender

Surrender your heart

Surrender and grow

What would life feel like if you knew, deep down in your bones, that everything that happens to you is orchestrated specifically for your growth? If you really KNEW this, would you be upset when things don’t go your way? Would you feel the need to put up a fight against each
perceived injustice? Would each illness be something to resist and eradicate post haste? Would all your struggles and hurts of the past be relegated to the “I’m trying to forget that ever happened” trash heap of the mind?

Trust that everything happens for the highest good

For me, anxiety has been the default emotion much of my life. If I wasn’t happy, I was probably feeling some amount of anxiety. I know now that I would not be anxious at all if I trusted that everything is here for my highest good. Happily, I’m here to say that it’s getting much better for me, as I process and release fear, and love my innocent and vulnerable heart. As I become more aware of how I’m held by Spirit in an embrace of love, anxiety has no hold. It’s a process of learning that I can trust in each situation.

Freedom from victimhood

The frequently asked question, “Why do bad things happen to good people?,” can be answered with another. I would ask, instead, “Why judge if what has happened is good or bad?” Do we really know, ultimately, what is good and bad for us? Haven’t the trials and tribulations in our lives been our biggest teachers? Is anything ever totally bad or totally good? When something is judged as bad or negative, does that help us deal with it better? As Matt Kahn says in his book, Whatever Arises, Love That, A Love Revolution that Begins with You, “…the heart of surrender frees you from viewing your life through the eyes of victimhood.”

What does your heart want to surrender now?

Unexpected

Unexpected

Do you ever stumble across something that lifts you right out of a fearful mood, like a joke or a video, maybe a line from a book you just finished reading, or a few words spoken by a friend who doesn’t know how you feel? And you begin to laugh! Well, your body can’t multitask emotions, so it throws aside the first emotion and takes on the second one — happiness and laughter! Then you marvel at what an Unexpected gift you’ve just received!

The Universe Works in Unexpected Ways

Do you ever want something in your heart, maybe not yet even verbalized, and the answer shows up? Like you wanted that candle display and then your friend gives it to you, no questions asked! Or you wanted to be successful and it happens, but in another town! Maybe you desired a piece of silk to meditate upon and then someone you just met says she has a gift for you — a huge piece of silk! Or you really admired someone’s patience, and then you were presented with lots of annoying opportunities to hone your own patience. Wow, the way the Universe works! Unexpected gifts!
As you may have guessed, all these have happened to me or to a close friend. We can ask, manifest, or intend all we want. Yeah, it works. But then you need to take what comes as a result. Sometimes, it doesn’t come in the color you wanted (the silk!), or in the city you love (Bellevue, not Edmonds!), or in the way you envisioned (I developed my own patience!), yet the gift is given.

A Blessing in Disguise

When it happens to you, what will your response be? I want mine to be, “Thank you, Supreme Being, for all good gifts, all perfect gifts, which you’ve given me.” And I treasure the ultimate blessing.
On the other hand, if I am suffering and I can see that the pain I am going through is for a purpose, I can be thankful even while still in the learning phase! This is what I strive for.
There is a saying that hindsight is 20/20, but to be able to see clearly, to be aware of what you’re learning during the learning experience itself, is X-ray vision!

There are No Accidents

Hone your Superperson skills by remembering that there are no accidents, that your life is precious, and that your experiences are tailor-made for your growth. Oh, and remember that the Universe conspires to amaze and confuse us, and thus to bless us!

What Do You Believe?

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , General Post

Photo of painted girl by Senjuti KunduRecently, I was asked what I believe. My first reaction was to say it doesn’t matter. But in my own heart, as I live my life, it does matter. If we are interested in more than just floating through our lives, with no rudder for steering our ship, I think we need some sort of idea or belief about what we’re here for. Our belief informs our destination and how we arrive.

I Believe in Spirit Energy

I believe in the Divine Beloved, Spirit, the Inner Wellspring of Life, Source, All There Is, and Oneness, to use a few of the multitudinous names of that ineffable Spirit Energy that we are all connected to, and which resides within and around us, everywhere. I believe the loving Divine Spirit doesn’t care what words we find to explain it, since they are only signposts. I believe this Spirit is Compassion, and much more. I believe we are here on planet Earth for a purpose. I believe our purpose is to become aware of, and partake in, our intimate connection with the Divine Beloved.

I Believe in Authenticity

I believe each of us has the same high calling, which is to be authentically ourselves. I believe we are made of Love, and that Love is our true nature. I believe that underneath our strife, fear, anger, joy and sadness is Love. I believe that removing all the obstacles to love, or to our authentic nature, is freeing and healing.

I believe that there are many reasons for sickness, and I don’t understand them all. I believe most chronic illnesses can receive healing from any perspective: from the mind, from the body and/or from the spirit.

I believe that a relationship with Love can bring to us all that we need and ever could want.

I believe that mental assent to a belief system doesn’t translate into experiencing the connection we have with the One. Only experience can bring someone to their inner Wellspring of Life. And there are as many ways to get there as there are people on this earth.

I Believe in Healing

I see healing as a “hard reset,” like when you return your cell phone or computer to its factory settings. Healing is a process whereby we become more of what we were when we were born, more vulnerable, more open, more excited about our world… more innocent. Healing is an inner process that doesn’t change us into something we are not, nor does it add extraneous beliefs. Healing brings us back to where we started, with all the wisdom and love we’ve amassed through experience.

Energy Healing Aligns, Balances and Empowers Us

Reiki ties into this so beautifully, since it helps us to touch our inner lives and experience our connection  to All There Is. Energy healing aligns us, balances us, and empowers us through this process of helping us to experience who we really are. Reiki allows us to see that we are much more than flesh and blood, we are Spirit and Life!

Blessed Release

Blessed Release -- walking away from domestic violence

After many years of watching a case of domestic violence unfurl itself before my eyes, and having no way in which to extricate my loved one from its jaws of slow and steady death, blessed release has, at last, come, as she walked away.

Watching injustices like this can make one bitter over time, but the challenge is to choose to remain peace-loving and kind to all, including the perpetrator. At day’s end, it is always the victim’s choice to remain a victim or to go, just as it is our choice to open or embitter our hearts.

Few believe the Universe is totally good, that it is always conspiring to heal us, that it choreographs all our experiences for our highest good. I am one of those.

My prayer today:

Please uncover within me the dark strands of wariness and distrust that lie within my being. I am aware that they are there because of my painful past experiences of the perceived betrayal of my inner trust. I felt that my fear and anger, and the resultant shutting down of my trust, were necessary for my survival at the time. I forgive myself for closing my heart of pure love, as I realize that pure love is actually my true nature.

Help me to look at those closed areas of my innocence and the dark strands of distrust that lie within me. I use the light of my consciousness to move toward surrender, gently, as a flower bud opens to the light of the sun. (I realize that this may mean, at first, gathering the courage to simply touch the edges of that distrust within.)

Help me to find the dance of my life swirling within me, and to join in with abandon now. Let me quiet myself enough to hear the music of full inner harmony that arises spontaneously from the depths of my own being.
And so it is that I am healed.

Treating Anxiety with Reiki — the Effects Are Real… And Medically Approved!

Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , General Post

Free from anxiety with reikiAs an anxiety sufferer, I can attest to the healing effects of Reiki for the psyche. We know that anxiety truly is a body/mind/spirit condition, and Reiki addresses all these areas!

Reiki helps clear unwanted patterns and conditioning

Having undergone psychotherapy and having used medication for 12 years for anxiety, I can vouch for the efficacy of these modalities! I’ve used EFT tapping and acupuncture as well, which also are very beneficial. The added benefit of a self-Reiki practice has been a literal godsend to me! Practicing Reiki daily since my attunement in 2007 has kept my awareness of Spirit moving in my life constant. It works deeply to help me clear unwanted patterns and conditioning, which are big components of anxiety. And it brings peace.

Break the negative energy

When my clients come in to see me for anxiety, I scan their energetic field. The aura around a person carries a lot of information about us. I use my intuition to interpret the data and guide the client to the core issues. The key is openness and readiness to look at what may seem “unsavory” past experiences.

But to be clear, if the readiness isn’t there, Spirit won’t reveal the underlying problem or push you to work on anything you don’t want to work on. The process is a gentle one, filled with total acceptance and a feeling that Spirit honors each person for their willingness to courageously work on core issues to allow the healing to happen. All the while, the lovely Reiki energy is flowing to clear old detrimental belief patterns and spiritual/emotional blockages. At the same time, the energy is deeply calming and soothing. And the energy keeps working for days, and even weeks after the session is completed!

Experience the soothing and freeing nature of Reiki for yourself!

A good way to try out Reiki is the group event we call “Guided Meditation, Ear Acupuncture, and a Reiki Blessing,” which will be held this Sunday the 11th of February at 1pm. To learn more and sign up, CLICK HERE.

Who Are You?

Who Am I, photo by septian-simon

Who are we, really? Are we more than our labels, societal roles, familial roles or classifications? Why do we do what we do in our lives, truly? In other words, are we more than what we do or who we seem to be on the outside?

Who am I?

These questions can help us to get to the heart of what drives us and what we really love. They lead us to our core, to “the Watcher,” as Eckhart Tolle describes in his books and lectures. The Watcher is that part of us that observes all we do with calmness and without judgment. It’s the unique “Me,” our true nature, our authentic selves. The Watcher doesn’t care about fads or responsibilities. It only cares about our highest soul purpose, which is our own unique way of being.

Let Your Love Shine

We all have a way of bringing light and love into the world. Our core selves know it well, but conditioning via our culture and upbringing, as well as the hurts we’ve endured, have their way with us, covering over our light. Our job is to uncover those parts of our innocence so that our authentic selves can come through. It takes courage… and love.

My Reiki clients frequently ask about their life’s purpose. The general answer, which isn’t exactly what they want to hear, but is a pointer in that direction, is that our life’s purpose is to be love wherever we are. Being love to ourselves and to everything and everyone is a great way to live. Let’s start there…and end there. Nothing we do satisfies so deeply as being love. It’s our true nature.

A wonderful meditation to help us on our way to self-knowledge and peace is to chant inwardly “love.” Feel it inside you and around you as you chant it. Inhale “lovvvvve” and exhale “lovvvve,” like the waves of the sea. It’s easy and centering. Try it for 10 minutes a day, and see what happens.
